“A what? You want to keep a rabbit in the house?” Mrs. Noland says in surprise to her daughter, Hannah. And so begins the the story of Hannah’s House Rabbit. “Hannah is approaching her 10th birthday when she talks her Mother into adopting a bunny, who she names Sparkles.” Although a work of fiction, the story is based on the antics of author’s own rabbit. “When my husband and I were married in the 1980s, our apartment didn’t allow dogs. Since I had rabbits as a child and enjoyed their puppy-like personalities, we decided to adopt a bunny,” Spiotta-DiMare says. “Domino was a great, little buddy,” she recalls fondly. “He was a Mini-Lop mix, all white with brown spots. Dom followed us around the apartment, hopped on the furniture and played games with rabbit toys. He also got into his share of mischief – stealing the pet bird seed boxes and hiding them in his cage was a favorite escapade. His antics are all included in the book.”
