In 1909 Amsterdam's German-American Alliance, which included both Jews and Gentiles, had over 600 members. Having just formed in 1908, seven years after the National German-Alliance was created, the Amsterdam German-Alliance held its first German Day in the city in 1909. This reprint of the scarce Official Souvenir Book of the day contains information in German and English on the various German churches, synagogues, institutions and businesses existing in Amsterdam at that time. Just a few years later, World War I began, and a lot of anti-German-American sentiment was stirred up. The German-American pride exhibited in this book went underground. This book offers a valuable look inside a German-American community prior to the First World War.
