Synopsis

On October 8, 1871, two fires occurred, the famous Chicago Fire and the devastating but obscure Peshtigo Fire. The fire in Chicago destroyed just over 3 square miles of the city. The Peshtigo Fire consumed an estimated 1.5 million acres or 2,400 square miles in northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Thousands of men, women and children perished. The town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin – home to 1,700 – disappeared in the flames. No other fire in United States history has cost so many lives. This account, told through the eyes of a 15-year-old Wisconsin lumberjack working in the woods near Peshtigo, gives a glimpse of life before and after that fateful day. Find out what precipitated this disaster and how some people survived the firestorm.
