Stratford-on-Avon 1564 - idem 1616, poète dramatique anglais. On connaît mal sa vie. Fils d'un commerçant ruiné, il se maria à dix-huit ans ; en 1594, il était acteur et actionnaire de la troupe du lord chambellan. Vers 1598, il s'installe au théâtre du Globe et, vers 1613, il se retire à Stratford. Son oeuvre, qui comprend des poèmes (Vénus et Adonis, 1593) et un recueil de Sonnets (1609), est essentiellement dramatique. On peut distinguer dans son théâtre trois périodes : la jeunesse (1590 - 1600), marqué par un enthousiasme très élisabéthain, qui est l'époque des comédies légères et des fresques historiques (Henri VI, v. 1590 ; Richard III ; la Mégère apprivoisée, v. 1594 ; Roméo et Juliette, le Songe d'une nuit d'été, v. 1595 ; le Marchand de Venise, v. 1596 ; Beaucoup de bruit pour rien, v. 1598 ; Jules César, v. 1599 ; Comme il vous plaira, les Joyeuses Commères de Windsor, la Nuit des rois, v. 1600) ; une période (1600 - 1608) où, sous l'effet des déceptions politiques et personnelles, les tragédies sombres alternent avec quelques comédies (Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, le Roi Lear, Antoine et Cléopâtre, v. 1606 ; Coriolan, v. 1607 ; Timon d'Athènes, v. 1608) ; à partir de 1608, le retour à l'apaisement avec les pièces romanesques (Cymbeline, v. 1609 ; Contes d'hiver, v. 1610 ; la Tempête, v. 1611). Ecrit pour un public composé d'hommes du peuple et d'aristocrates, ce théâtre étonne par la variété et la vigueur du style, par le foisonnement des personnages et leur diversité sociale et psychologique, par la maîtrise de la construction dramatique.
