Synopsis

This brief volume has a modest aim. Through 52 short reflections, the author attempts to present to those who embrace scripture some thoughts that may lead them to contemplate more deeply the particular passages under consideration and to act upon them in some very simple ways in everyday situations. The contrast between word and deed was a common motif in Greek literature, and the Gospel writers seem to have been well aware of this. Christ put into action a new definition of love as a choice, not just a feeling. He showed us that love is an act of the will, and to demonstrate that idea, he fed the hungry, healed the sick, and ultimately of course gave up his life as the sacrificial lamb led to slaughter. He died for us. By choosing to live and to die as he did, he provided a model for us to imitate. Words and deeds must work together if we are to live a Christian life. For those who have thus far rejected scripture, perhaps these short reflections may open up the Gospels so as to make them more accessible than they have been. For all who may pick up this book, I hope that they will find something herein that may cause them to pause and rethink a particular passage in such a way as to see clearly that the Gospels are not meant just to be read, but to be lived.
