If you understand this rule, when we read Section 1 of the 14th Amendment, we should understand that when the pronoun "persons" is used in this sentence, this pronoun is referring to America's citizens and no other citizens from other countries because of the rules of the use of pronouns. Here is how Section 1 of the 14th Amendment would read when the pronoun is taken out and the proper noun (subject or thesis of the Constitution) Americans or American is used to replace the pronouns: "All 'Americans' born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any 'American' of life, liberty, or prosperity, without due process of law; nor deny to any American within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
