This is the story of Toby, a fifteen year old boy living in the early part of the Twelfth century during the reign of King Stephen. A period in the history of England, when Barons, Lords and Bishops owned their own knight's and soldiers, and fought between each other to gain land and power. A time called the "Period of Anarchy" It tells of Toby, a poacher, making a living selling rabbits and pheasant to villagers as he roamed the length of Nottinghamshire. Until one day he came across a wounded knight and his daughter escaping the clutches of the powerful and brutal Barron Osbert. How Toby helped by hiding them in the shelters he had made in hedgerows, having someone tend the knight's wounds, disguised and fed them, laid false trails for the pursuing soldiers to follow while leading them to safety, and at the same time falling in love with Rebecca Anne, the knight's daughter. Then, when he felt betrayed, he followed his own quest. It tells why he was made a knight; how he won his spurs and came to the aid of King Stephen. The help he gave to the wounded knight was to change not only his life, but the future of England.
