Synopsis

Based in Virginia during the Antebellum period, Martha Mae (aka Marty) McCrory's life is forever changed by the effects of racial prejudice on her hometown of Harpers Ferry and the arrival of John Brown and his band of raiders in 1859. An adolescent during that eventful era, Marty keenly observed the culture of her time. Her story is told from a reflective perspective. Many years imbued her with vivid memories as well as insights into the significance of those events in the context of American history. As Marty invites her granddaughter, Mandy, to "settle down her bones" to listen, you are invited to join them. In Marty's words, you'll find that ". . . it is a mighty big tale for, while I was looking to change myself back in 1859, my world was about to be changed forever. There was a swift current of change flowing through Harpers Ferry, and by the time it was done it had rippled right on through the whole country."

À propos de l?auteur

Janet is a life-long observer of the world. Growing up on a dead-end street in central New York provided her with many sights to relish—from silvery spider webs glistening in the early-morning sun to Mother Earth's fragrant gown of daisies, black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's Lace and buttercups. Lying beneath azure skies, she loved to search for forms hidden within puffy clouds that floated above. She is the youngest of ten children born to an Irish lass and her groom—a man twelve years her senior. Playmates were rarely hard to find—time alone was precious. Youthful parenting offered many opportunities for joy, hope, wisdom, grace and, far too often, disappointments and even sorrows. Grandparenting now offers many of the same gifts and challenges but from a distinctly different perspective. Life in all its melodies offers a symphony of inspiration and that is where her stories bloom. History is a passion that has developed with age; fiction is her creative playground. Blending the two together is a fusion of fervor and zeal. Swift Currents of Change is her maiden voyage into the world of literature; its sequel, From Thence Shall Come, is currently gurgling forth from her pen. A retiree and graduate of Syracuse University, Janet and her husband now split their time between their homes in New York and Florida.
