The Gacaca courts were established upon the idea of traditional local Gacaca courts that had previously settled village or familial disputes, such as theft, marital issues, land rights, and property damage. The re-established Gacaca courts, nevertheless, had a completely different mandate, as they were meant to speed up the legal proceedings against the suspects of mass violations - by using as many courts as possible; reconstruct the truth about what happened during the genocide, and build reconciliation.
