In September 1940 Germany was preparing to invade England. They had already sent a group of saboteurs, parachuted into Kent, but these were all arrested in a very short time. In desperation they despatched a second group. This time they landed them along the South Coast, from a captured English fishing boat. Had it not been for a local agricultural engineer, repairing a broken binder, they may well have disappeared into the English country side, unnoticed. But they were spotted by this man and importantly, he was a member of the top secret Auxiliary Forces. What happened, over the next three days, changed the face of the war.

Bob Looker was born in Winchester but grew up in a small village, deep in the folds of the South Downs. After starting out in farm work, he joined the Royal Sussex Regiment at 16 years old and served in the Army for the next 24 years. This allowed him to travel the world and see jungles, deserts and the Arctic Circle as well as active service in various hop spots. It was from his upbringing that, many years later, he got the ideas for his books. He started writing about the smugglers, of the eighteenth century, that inhabited his village. This grew into a series of stories about smugglers, from around the nearby villages and towns. It was during the research for these stories that he chanced on a book about the Sussex Resistance movement in WWII. In this book he discovered that two of his uncles were members of the Auxiliary Forces and this was confirmed by one of their sons. This book is written as tribute to all these brave men, who were willing to put their lives at risk, by joining the Auxiliary Forces.
