Rabindranath Tagore was a famous Bengali poet, artist, philosopher, playwright, composer, and novelist. When he was only 8-years-old, Tagore started writing poetry and released his first substantial works at age 16. The Tagores were a wealthy and highly respected family in India. Even though he was born into a well-to-do family, Tagore was quite humble and his work often revealed his stance on the perceived social injustices of the day. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature—the first Indian to receive the award. Though his writings never became highly popular with Western audiences, he did manage to gain the respect of his peers that were, including H.G. Wells, William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, Albert Einstein, and Gandhi.
