Danton was long regarded as the Catiline of the French Eevolution, with the same gift of speech satis eloquentiae the same mental characteristics animus audax, impurus, dis hominibusque infestus; alieni appetens, sui profusus ;ardens in cupiditatibus and the same physical magna vi corporis; colos exsanguis ;foedi oculi. And even the most mendacious of eighteentli Tcentury memoirs hardly match the rancour with which writers like M. Taine have ransacked the rag-bags of history for materials to malign him. In repelling such charges it is hardly possible not to write as an advocate or to avoid repetitions of the same kind of disproof. For the accusations themselves have a certain horrid family likeness, and in dismembering an octopus there is little scope for variety of stroke. But such advocacy will neither be attributed to a childish itch for paradox nor be pooh-poohed as whitewashing by those who call to mind how long ago he was weighed in quite other scales than those of the Peltiers and Prudhommes and was not found wanting.
