The purpose of this book is to identify principles from social development theory and cognitive development theory that educators can apply in practice. The Breadth component focuses on the role of society, particularly poverty, on the cognitive development of children ages 5 to 10. Questions addressed include the following: How does a child think? How does a child speak? What are his characteristics of his judgment and reasoning? Why does a child think and express himself in a certain manner? Why is his curiosity easily satisfied with any answer? The works of theorists Bandura, Bruner, and Piaget and are compared and contrasted in relation to cognitive theory and changes in the public school system to accommodate children who are cognitively delayed.
