After hearing a story about his Great-Grandfather's emigration to the United States from Europe decades earlier, Tim is awakened to see the many beautiful differences in people. He embraces American Indian culture from an early age, and clings to one belief in particular as he faces the difficult situations that elementary school holds.

James Wortmann grew up in the San Fernando valley in Los Angeles during the 1970's. He remembers a time when kids raced to find baseballs hit into cornfields that surrounded his little league baseball games. Redeemable for a snow-cone, those balls were treasured dearly. Just a few years after this time, James experienced the first of two major accidents that altered his life: An industrial accident at his neighbor's recycling plant, left him with a fractured and dislocated femur. A car crash three years later, nearly ended his life, and resulted in a critical brain-injury and multiple breaks of his back, femur and pelvis. Striving to recover from these traumatic injuries, James played competitive Ultimate Frisbee, and challenged himself by taking long trips on his bicycle. Three months prior to the car accident at age 19, he completed a 2000 mile bicycle trip along the West coast of North America. Less than one year later and after extensive rehabilitation, James traveled to the far corners of British Columbia, Canada on his bicycle. These events are very significant for him in his writing as they relate to his insight and passion for life. James Wortmann has been a children's educator for more than thirty years, he has a well rounded education in the Arts and Humanities. He has attended colleges in Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon. Portland is where he makes his home.
