The Student Ethnography Handbook is designed to accompany the enrichment program Using Ethnography to Explore Culture in the Natural and Built Environments. The enrichment program provides middle school and home schooled students with a carefully sequenced set of experiences aimed at developing a specific set of ethnographic research skills. The entire program is intended as a creative guide for teachers and students. Although It is not intended as a curriculum prescription to be followed in a lock step fashion, specific goals and lesson plans are provided. The program assumes that it will be used by creative teachers who see a need for the development of the types of skills which the program aims to develop. It provides students with an opportunity to practice the skills involved in observation and the writing of ethnographies, detailed descriptions of culture. In doing so, students are able acquire knowledge about their culture, their environments and the manner in which they are participant observers. The Handbook has brief discussions of ethnographic research issues and titles covering, Observation, Culture and Communication, Japanese Gardens and an Interview Guide.
