Richard I. Burton, MD, a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Medical School, trained in surgery at the University of Rochester and the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, and has now lived and breathed academic health centers (AHCs) for over fifty years.

Since 1974, Dr. Burton has held many significant administrative roles at the University of Rochester, including fourteen years as the chair of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, two years as acting chair of neurosurgery, and ten years as the senior associate dean of academic affairs.

Dr. Burton has additionally served in several national leadership positions, including director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

When granted sabbatical from the University of Rochester Medical Center, Dr. Burton wrote Leading Department Excellence to enhance medical leadership and build stronger structures for current and future students, doctors, and patients of AHCs.
