JILL STERN was born in Springfield, Illinois, where her father, J. David Stern, was publishing the Springfield Times-Record. Eventually, he became owner of the former Philadelphia Record, and, among others, the New York Post, and established a name as one of the country’s most vigorous newspaper publishers. Her mother served as the Record’s literary editor. After attending Wellesley and Bryn Mawr, Ms. Stern acted in numerous summer theaters and stock companies and appeared on Broadway. But she finally succumbed to printer’s ink and went to work as a general-assignment reporter and feature writer on the Philadelphia Record. When her husband was sent overseas, she joined the WAVES and served for more than two years. Eventually, she came to New York and worked as a chief staff writer for a public-relations firm, where she lived for many years raising her daughter, Janet. As soon as Ms. Stern finished writing “The Best Time for Love”, she knew she was onto something. She’d written two previous novels—the first, published in hard cover as “Not in Our Stars” by David McKay Company, Inc and in paperback as “Nine Miles to Reno” by Signet, was well received by critics and readers alike—but she felt certain “Best Time for Love” was her best. For starters, the novel practically wrote itself. The characters came alive and seemed to be pulling her along. Maybe that’s because the story was inspired by her own experience. Retired and living in St Petersburg, Florida, Ms. Stern had resigned herself to a life of peaceful, inconsequential days when along came a silver-haired gentleman…The real life “Lenny”, a casual acquaintance out of her past, flew over from the east coast of Florida to take her out for a magical evening of dining on the water under a full moon. As Ms. Stern tells it, that night caught her completely by surprise—including all the romantic stirrings she thought she had left behind forever.
