Synopsis
Ascalon, Kansas is the wildest of cattle towns. Located at the end of the legendary—and arduous—Chisholm Trail, it has earned a reputation that threatens its development. Judge Thayer, fearful that Ascalon will lose its position as county seat, feels that Seth Craddock is the man to clean up the town. The appointment proves disastrous. Craddock is killing a man a day and is giving the purveyors of vice and illegal activity free rein. Thayer then turns to new man in town Cal Morgan. Morgan, former cowboy turned agriculture professor turned prospective farmer, finds a reason to accept the challenge. The price he pays is steep and gratitude for his efforts is not forthcoming.George W. Ogden (1871-1966) was a gifted writer of Western novels. His characters and themes—unlike those of other, better-remembered writers of his day—were not stereotypical but real and impelling. TRAIL'S END has all the action and the suspense one would expect of a great Western tale, but Ogden’s superb skill lends and added dimension.
