CUMANN CARAD NA GAEILGE / THE PHILO-CELTIC SOCIETY Mícheál Ó Lócháin began our activities with Irish language classes in Brooklyn in 1872 and our magazine "An Gaodhal" in 1881, and in that way he founded the Irish Language movement in America. Between 1872 and 1893, our organization, our branches, and independent "Philo-Celtic" societies grew throughout America. Our classes were called "The Gaelic League." Douglas Hyde came to New York to see our organization and our classes in 1891. In 1893, he used our organization and our classes as his model to found The Gaelic League in Ireland. The generation which The Gaelic League taught between 1893 and 1916 - that is the generation which led in the establishment of the modern state of Ireland. Mícheál Ó Lócháin died in 1899. "An Gaodhal" ceased publication in 1904. Our organization declined through the 20th century. But we're back, working for the renaissance of the Irish language throughout the world.
