Had the same justice been done to my father as was considered due to his contemporaries in the world of letters, his life would have been written and published within six months of his death; but no one came forward to do it: his friends were either unwilling or incapable, and his children were too young. But it has been represented to me lately that some record of his public and private actions is called for, if only to complete the notices of the leading men of literature of the last generation. Under these circumstances, I have been persuaded to attempt this work. The length of time (now a period of nearly four and twenty years) which has elapsed since my fathers death places innumerable difficulties in my way.
