Envisioning Peace is a collection of individual narratives and commentaries meant for everyone, and especially educators. In the fast-paced profession of education we need to take the time to acknowledge our own story and get to know our students’ stories. When that happens trust is built, connections occur, and the power of compassion and care in education come to the forefront. These stories address some of life’s major challenges and show how these individuals have transformed their lives through the power of compassion and care, illuminating both our profound diversity and our connectedness. Life narratives like these convince me that caring for others and envisioning a peaceful means to live can unite all of us—if we’re willing to listen and understand.

Susan F. Carson is a professor of education in the College of Education at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Carson’s scholarship and research focuses include the implementation of peace education in urban K-12 schools, social justice and peace education with a multicultural emphasis, and peace and justice studies in international education. She developed a model program with Kent School Services Network (a social service network with 21 organizations and six school districts), teaching undergraduate students at identified schools serving homeless youth. Dr. Carson’s 2010 Fulbright Award to research “Principles and Practices of Caring Communities: Women’s Participation in the Public Spheres of Education in Contemporary India” demonstrated her effectiveness as a cross-cultural educator and negotiator. Her international research in peace education has included work with the University of Education, Padagogische Hochschule Schwabisch Gmund, Germany; Lucknow University, Lucknow, India; the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; the Northern Council for Integrated Education in Belfast; and the Consultores Associados in Uberaba, Brazil.
