The Recollection Room, by Ian King Hamilton The Recollection Room is based at an Oxford college reunion in 2012, days before Aung San Suu Kyi’s first visit to Oxford since being put under house arrest. Two old friends, Marcus Mairwaring and Gabriel Jonas, are reunited with Lotte Greenwood, another ex-fellow-student and journalist who is there to cover the visit. On the first evening, however, disaster strikes and Gabriel finds himself in hospital. Meanwhile Lotte becomes romantically involved for the first time in decades with a complete stranger. The novel covers the back stories of four young people before, during and since their student days. The tale of each one has harrowing and traumatic elements and things are rarely what they seem to be on the surface. The novel takes place partly in 2012 but alternating chapters are narrated by the four protagonists involving a period of almost six decades and several countries. The social and political aspects of these settings feature prominently, not least the casual sexism and racism commonplace in the seventies, and the current day story has an element of political intrigue as well as slapstick humour. As the mystery unravels the influence of Aung San on her old friend Lotte is profound, and compels her to rethink her future. But is it too late?

Ian King Hamilton was born in Dumfries Scotland and is related to Robert Louis Stevenson. He lives in Buxton, Derbyshire with his wife Jeanette, occasionally their 3 adult sons Rick, Rob and James, and Titch the dog and Mau Mau the cat. He is a soon to be retired languages teacher and enjoys reading, music and travel. He has published one other novel, The Mountain.
