Sam Pryor III was born in 1928 in Greenwich, Connecticut, and attended Taft School, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953 as a pfc, retiring as a 1st lt. in 1955. Initially assigned as a lawyer to the commandant of the Marine Corps, he then was assigned to Navy JAG. Mr. Pryor joined the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell in 1955, representing banking firms, including Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan. He also represented Exxon on a variety of matters, the owners of the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, and the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. Mr. Pryor ran Davis Polk’s Paris office from 1964 to 1967. He represented several foreign governments, including the United Kingdom in the United States on its public sale of British Petroleum and British Airways. He retired in 1978 and became senior counsel for the next seven years. Mr. Pryor serves as Chairman of the World Rehabilitation Fund and a director of Women’s eNews. He is a former trustee of Northern Westchester Hospital, Taft School, Chair emeritus of the Republican Majority for Choice, an overseer of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and Vice Chairman of the Episcopal Church Pension Fund (national). Long committed to conservation, he is a former president of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission and former Chairman of the Westchester Land Trust and the Town of Bedford Open Space Committee. He has been a Director of the Land Trust Alliance, Scenic Hudson, New York Audubon, the National Forest Foundation, and the League of Conservation Voters (both New York and national). He is married to Sally Reese Pryor and the father of Samuel Pryor IV, Katherine L. Burgeson, Daniel C. Pryor, Joseph W. Pryor, and Edward R. Pryor and has nine grandchildren.
