In the Face of Evil: The Sustenance of Traditions, focuses on four women whom Peter Petschauer calls his mothers. The wars of the twentieth century deeply affected them, as did the brutal Fascist and National Socialist regimes in Italy and Germany. Two of the women lived in Italy’s Dolomites and two in Germany. Traditions sustained them and their families in these terrible times through the routines of their households and their lives. The details of daily living allow a clear view of values that are often ignored by historians in search of seemingly more important political events and public activities. These were the women who most influenced the author and stand here for all the women who were able to resist the ideologies of the Fascists and Nazis and survive two world wars.

À propos de l'auteur

Peter Petschauer arrived in the U.S. in 1957 at age 17 and almost immediately set out to continue the education he had started in Europe and obtained B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in European and Russian History at New York University. He taught European history at Appalachian State University from 1968-2006. In addition, he led several programs, including the university's faculty and staff development center and headed Appalachian’s Faculty Senate and the UNC system’s Faculty Assembly. He taught at several other institutions, including for ten years in the S.C. Governors School at the College of Charleston, for seven years the Summer Institute at Palacki University in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, and one semester at North Ossetian State University in Vladikavkaz, Ossetia. He published and presented widely both nationally and internationally. His last publication, Der Vater und die SS (Brixen/Bressanone, 2007), explored his relationship with his father.
