Frances Dana Barker Gage was born outside of Marietta, Ohio in 1808. Her strong feelings about human rights led her to become an influential abolitionist, suffragist, and temperance advocate. Frances, known as Aunt Fanny to most, communicated her zeal for reform via letters, poems, novels, newspaper and journal articles, as well as national conference speeches that helped pave the way for many of the rights we enjoy today. Her dedication to human causes led to close relationships with Susan B. Anthony, Wendell Phillips, Clara Barton, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Amelia Bloomer, and many more well known activists of the 19th century. The letters within this book provide a glimpse into some of those friendships and collegial associations.
