Synopsis

This comprehensive anthology offers renowned poet Gerrard Allen’s aka G.’s greatest collection of literary work. This expression of Black American poetry was selected in accordance with his three absolute criteria: vulnerability, male wisdom, and intellectual insight. With more than 25 years devoted to performing, teaching, and writing, G. still credits the influence of this literary work to Jean Toomer's, Cane in the conceptual framework of this anthology. Originally using his daughter as the muse for this work; it has developed into an inclusive anthology for all Black girls and women alike. In his themed piece “I'm Gorgeous,” he presents his critical reflections on beauty, the weight of society and the pressures Black girls face within it. Throughout this volume, G. includes extensive introductions to black women of all ages and stages of life. More than any other anthology, this book provides readers who enjoy the intellect of poetry, photography, prose and short essays, with nearly everything they need in a single volume.
