Keith Schafer was raised in south-central Missouri in a rural area near Licking, which is 22 miles from the little Jadwin community featured in his first two books. He is a member of a very large extended family from that area that includes the Schafer and the Lough clans. In his professional career, Keith held a number of executive positions in state human services agencies, where he first learned of the New York Children's Aid Society Orphan Train program and its impact on the history of Missouri and surrounding states.
