This is an account of the challenges involved in preparing for and crossing the Atlantic in 2009 in Alchemy, a family cruising yacht as part of the Atlantic Rally in the course of which two yachts had to be abandoned on the high seas. It is a story of friendship and team work which bound together the various crews involved on Alchemy in the journey to and from France. The four central characters crossing to Saint Lucia from the Canaries had a combined age of 278 and two had little experience at sea but they all drew closer together as a result of their 19 days under sail and the necessity to resolve the technical and sailing issues that inevitably arise from this kind of voyage.
