BLAKE BRADDYWhat separates the Rolson McKane series from other southern mysteries and supernatural mysteries?Rolson McKane. I created this character as a tortured soul, full of flaws, but someone I genuinely feel people can empathize with. He's got his own past, and there are times he wants to give up, but the drive to do the right thing is much stronger than any negative impulse of his. Then, you have the supernatural. It's a less flashy version of what you might see in a Stephen King novel, but it is nevertheless always on the edge of the world. I love combining genres, so writing these mysteries, which are crime novels at their hearts, and mixing in the horror and the supernatural, ghost like elements, makes me really happy. Why the South? So many books are set in New York or Los Angeles. I think the world of the South, especially rural places like the middle of Georgia, are highly under-served in fiction. Of course, you have the works of people like Flannery O'Connor, but I wanted to do something different. I tried to create subtle horror stories in this sort of mundane world, with a mystery to be solved, as well. I wanted to create my own southern Castle Rock -- mostly because Stephen King is my favorite writer -- and that's where you get Lumber Junction from. If you've read the books of James Lee Burke (in the Dave Robicheaux series), then you'll probably have an idea of where I'm coming from here. So, why should people give the Rolson McKane series a try?If you like genre fiction that makes you think, books that revolve around flawed characters, or novels with a real, true sense of mystery, then you'll love the Rolson McKane novels. Each book basically represents a different genre, and the characters are really well-drawn.What order should I read the books in?It's a must that they be read in order, so here is the chronological list:* Boogie House* The Devil Came Calling* Dirt Merchant* Six Feet South [coming soon]Rolson McKane Southern Mystery Series eBook Categories:* Southern Crime* Mystery Books Kindle* Southern Mysteries and Thrillers* Crime Books* Page Turners Mysteries* Detective Novels Kindle* Southern Thriller
When Rolson McKane stumbles onto the body in the juke joint across the woods, he never expects to be pulled into a world of small-town secrets, murder, and corruption. But after he discovers that no one seems to care about young Emmitt Laveau, turns out solving the mystery is mostly up to him. The visions and supernatural encounters at the heart of his discovery seem to exist halfway between dreams and reality, and Rolson can’t quite tell the difference anymore. Once a police officer in Lumber Junction, Georgia, Rolson is unemployed and mostly inebriated all the time. His suspension from the force was the result of drunkenly sideswiping a woman’s car with his own, a seemingly random act of negligence, until she comes to visit him one day for a solemn favor. Meanwhile, his ex-wife, Vanessa, has reappeared out of nowhere, hell-bent on getting her life together, as Rolson slowly destroys his. He can’t bring himself to tell her about the dreams, the ghosts, the people who seem to be following him. Not that he’s a stranger to misery. The son of a son of a long line of drunks, he’s been haunted his whole life, just not by ghosts. And though he’d rather not think about it, delving into his past might be the key to solving the entire mystery of Emmitt Laveau’s death. The bodies start to pile up as Rolson uncovers the truth, investigating a murder no one seems to want solved, all while staying ahead of the corrupt and vindictive cops in local politician Leland Brickmeyer’s back pocket. Driven by a personal need for redemption, perhaps as a means to erase his dark past, his only allies in the effort appear to be his bail bondsman, the woman he nearly killed, and the ghost of the victim, who visits him nightly in his dreams.
