Goethe was characterized of both as a poet, as well as a playwright, short story writer, critic and as a natural scientist. His poetic oeuvre spans literary epochs of the "Sturm und Drang" to "Romance". Together with Friedrich Schiller, he is the center of the "Weimar Classicism."
