Fred Reed was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1945,spent 1956-57 in Athens, Alabama, as a Tom Sawyer simulacrum, complete with bare feet, BB gun, and fielder's mitt, while has father worked as a mathematician at Redstone Arsenal. His teen years passed in rural King George County, Virginia, drinking unwise but memorable amounts of beer and driving like a thoroughgoing dammed fool. Halfway through college, being bored, he enlisted in the Marines, went to Asia for the then-current stupid war, and got more shrapnel in the face than he really wanted. Returning, he fell into journalism. It was a perfect fit because it didn't require any qualifications and he didn't have any. There followed years of racing around the planet reporting on various things, a stint at Solder of Fortune magazine, and other indications of sociopathy. He currently lives in Mexico near Guadalajara with his Mexican wife Violeta and three useless but agreeable dogs.
