Synopsis

After nineteen-year-old Souren Barkev Tahsjian observes his neighbor being arrested at bayonet point by gendarmes, he realizes that bold action will be required if he is to avoid being devoured by the monster of the genocide in WWI-era Turkey. From that moment on, Souren uses his wits, inventiveness, and courage to escape capture and imprisonment several times over in this thrilling true story. Using Souren’s personal memoirs as well as many conversations with the protagonist himself, the book captures the intensity of the times, the excitement of the escapes, and the passion of a young man who dares to fall in love – even as he is carrying out his latest creative deception. On the Monster’s Back is an inspiring read for anyone interested in learning the tragic truth of the Armenian Genocide through the eyes of an intrepid survivor and how that historical event set a stage for events unfolding today.
