Leaver has assembled a notable team of contributors from across the wider Lutheran church. Each chapter draws readers into the history and contributions of one or more landmark hymnals, ranging from the first books published during Luther's lifetime to volumes that have shaped the dimensions of the contemporary Lutheran church in the United States. Chapter authors include Leaver, Paul Grime, Markus Rathey, Joseph Hurl, Dianne M. McMullen, Jon D. Vieker, Paul Westermeyer, Mark A. Granquist, Daniel Zager, and Gracia Grindal.

Robin A. Leaver is professor emeritus at Westminster Choir College and visiting professor at Yale University and Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The Rev. Dr. Jon D. Vieker is senior assistant to Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. Prior to joining the president's staff in September 2010, Vieker served as assistant director for the LCMS Commission on Worship, a position he began in November 1998. In that role, he was involved with all aspects of research, development, editing, and production of Lutheran Service Book and its core companion volumes.

Mark Granquist is associate professor of church history at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He is the author of Lutherans in America: A New History (Fortress Press, 2015) and Scandinavian Pietists: Spiritual Writings from 19th-Century Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland (2015), and coauthor, with Maria Erling, of The Augustana Story: Shaping Lutheran Identity in North America (Fortress Press, 2008).

Daniel Zager is associate dean of Sibley Music Library, associate professor of musicology, and affiliate faculty for organ and historical keyboards at the Eastman School of Music.
