Joseph Madachy created "Recreational Mathematics" magazine and then "Journal of Recreational Mathematics" at the urging of Gardner. The material was all contributed by people with a history of working in the field and was put together by Charles Ashbacher, former co-editor of "Journal of Recreational Mathematics."

Charles Ashbacher is the long-time co-editor of "Journal of Recreational" mathematics in charge of manuscript content and book reviews. He has also been a college instructor in mathematics and computer science for many years and is an avid reader and reviewer.
