Synopsis

Building a Vocabulary Powerhouse is a series of vocabulary expansion books designed for grades K-5. The entire series consists of 6 books, which contain fun activities for 300 words for each book. One book, for grades K-1, reinforces sight words, while the other books introduce challenging words for grades 1-5. Past and current research has shown that vocabulary development in young students, particularly with regard to challenge words, is a strong indicator for success in reading, writing, and life in general. With better comprehension of these more difficult words, students show growth in reading power and become better written and oral communicators. This unique format of each book introduces 10 weekly words with five days of practice. Each day provides repetitive exposure to the given vocabulary through the use of fun word puzzles and activities. As students complete the daily work, they will become comfortable with more sophisticated words that they may encounter in their reading and everyday lives. Consequently, students may begin to use these challenging words as they speak and write.

Ming: She was born, raised, educated in China where she taught four years of English before coming to America. She then started to teach adult education at a community college and community centers. Since then, she has been teaching more than 20 years in American public elementary schools, grades K-3 as well as ESL classes. Paula: She is a retired teacher, after having taught 37 years in an inner city community, and has had extensive teaching experience with both regular and special needs children. Her first teaching experience was with middle school aged learning disabled and behavior disordered students. She then went on to teach pre-school learning disabled and behavior disordered students. Following that, she taught in a self-contained BD classroom for over 20 years and then spent the last 8 years of her teaching as a K-5 resource teacher. They co-authored a series of Summer Pathway to Success - Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade as well as Exercises for the Brain.
