Synopsis

What is the work of the humanities in a posthuman world? The collection of essays in this volume constitutes a response to this pressing question. This book brings together final papers from English A487: Posthumanism, a seminar at Loyola University New Orleans in Fall 2014. Essays were voluntarily submitted for inclusion and cover a range of topics emerging from a comparative media study of print novels, film, and videogames concerned with biological and mechanical augmentations. Arranged alphabetically by author, the chapters herein address the posthuman as it pertains to philosophy and ethics (11, 13, 16, 15, 17), embodiment (4, 7, 21), identity (5, 10, 14), race, gender, and otherness (1, 2, 6, 12), conceptions of family (18, 20), fear and horror (9, 19) and much more. Each essay is strong individually, but appearing together—in dialog with one another—they demonstrate the variety, depth, vitality, and even urgency of a conversation carried out over the course of a semester.
