The author, an immigrant herself, is familiar with the struggles families face in trying to be part of the US school system. At the same time, and as an education professor, she appreciates the issues teachers face in truly understanding the struggles of immigrants.

Dr. Christel Broady, a professor of graduate education at Georgetown College in the USA, is a international and national leader in the field of TESOL and ESL Teacher Training. An immigrant herself, she represents internationals living in multicultural and –lingual families raising school age multilingual children. Dr. Broady has been assuming many roles of leadership in the field of teacher education and advocacy for English learners. A director of ESL teacher training for many years, she has a long record of activities in and outside of schools as well as assisting communities to create conditions for immigrant success. Her list of publications, keynotes talks, presentations, and awards and recognitions is long and can be found when googling her name. For TESOL, Dr. Broady has been active in education program accreditation as a reviewer and as a TESOL representative on the education programs accreditation body CAEP. In addition, Dr. Broady represented TESOL on a national workforce for the definition of a seal of bilinguality in K-12 schools. She was the president of the Kentucky TESOL, conference organizer and chair of a state TESOL, and Southeast states TESOL conference. At TESOL, she chaired the international Elementary School Interest section and is a member of the steering board for the TESOL IS Video and Digital Media.
