Set in 1939 as the world goes to war RUN FOR IT! follows the cross-country path of two teenage American boys who witness a murder and run for their lives. To the killers who are after them, Robert Bell and Merwyn Peterson look like easy prey. And they are -- a couple of yearlings separated by wolves from the herd. Afraid to confide in their parents or go to the police, the boys try to escape their pursuers by staying close behind them - tailing them from Chicago to New York City and up the Atlantic coast to Eastport, Maine. There, finally, in the Bay of Fundy, off Campobello Island, where the Roosevelts have their "little cottage," (twenty rooms!) the boys are caught. They face a fate worse than death. What they need, besides ingenuity and courage, is a miracle. RUN FOR IT! is a coming of age story that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages from teens to senior adults.

I've been a journalist, and I've worked for a military intelligence outfit. As the editor of my college daily (The Daily Illini, Urbana, Illinois) I covered panty raids, those parodies of the noble quest. I became a newspaper editor in downstate Illinois. I covered the first draft card burning in America as a stringer for The New York Times. I became a speech writer, and did that interesting work for 25 years. Along the way I got a PhD and for eight years I taught clear writing and speaking to MBA candidates. Now, as a free-lance editor, I edit manuscripts—fiction and non-fiction. (All of the books I have edited have won awards.) And I write. Run For It! won Royal Palm honors from the Florida Writers Association. My second novel, Cemetery Plot (a mystery story that touches upon terrible happenings in WWII) also won a Royal Palm award. You can get a look at me and my work at my website, www.tombenderbooks.com
