To say that Joel Allan Rich was a ‘Proust enthusiast’ would be a vast understatement. Although Joel taught and lectured about many figures such as Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, Virginia Woolf and many others, it was Marcel Proust who captured his interest, imagination, and heart. A born educator – Joel taught philosophy at Columbia College Chicago and taught liberal arts and philosophy in the adult education program at the University of Chicago. He also frequently lectured on Marcel Proust at the Newberry Library and gave annual lectures as part of the University of Chicago's First Friday series. This book of collected lectures were originally presented as a part of the First Friday series and showcases Joel’s vast knowledge and deep appreciation of Proust. Through his lectures and through his life, Joel enriched the lives of others.
