Managing Cognitive Issues is written in the same well-informed but easy-to-read style as A Caregiver’s Guide to Lewy Body Dementia. It speaks to families who are just beginning to notice Lewy body dementia (LBD) symptoms and answers their fears with the power of knowledge and the strength of hope. It describes the many symptoms, or risk factors, that warn of impending LBD and describes alternative therapies that focus on limiting the use of often dangerous drugs with a healthy lifestyle, stress management, better communication and a positive outlook. The authors’ goal is to help people extend awareness, maintain a better quality of life and regain some control over a life that may have begun to feel out of control.

The Whitworths have been working with with Lewy body disorders since the late 1990’s when James’s first wife, Annie, was struggling with LBD and Helen was her sister, Lucille’s caregiver. After Annied passed in 3003, James helped to found the national Lewy Body Dementia Association and was its first president. Helen is a retired nurse, educator and writer. After the two met and married in 2005, they began teaching about the disorder. This led to their well known A Caregiver’s Guide to Lewy Body Dementia and this new book. Their latest interest is in helping caregives and care facilities learn how to use alternative therapies to limit the use of behavior management and anxiety drugs with Lewy body disorders and the elderly in general. The Whitworths live in a 55+ community in Arizona and travel to the Pacific Northwest in the summer.
