Benjamin “Bear” Lyle is a self-taught custom callmaker that has specialized in making handmade Arkansas and Reelfoot Style duck calls since 2004. Growing up, Lyle was infatuated with deer hunting, but one day he was invited to go on his very first duck hunt. Despite many warnings about the addictive nature of waterfowl hunting, he went on the hunt and it changed his life forever. Lyle was instantly fascinated with the way you can call to a duck and watch the response in the air. He had used many deer grunt calls in the past to make a deer pause just long enough to get a shot, but never had he seen an animal change its intended course by 180 degrees in response to a man made call. Shortly after that initial duck hunting trip he picked up a duck call and started studying it with the mentality of “I can make one of those”. Lyle says he would have to credit his father for instilling that mentality into him at a very young age. He also spent many years working with his father on various woodworking projects which helped to develop his craftsmanship skills. Being raised to make do with what you’ve got was sometimes a hard lesson, but if something was broke, they'd work together to get it fixed instead of paying someone else to do it for them. Being raised this way is what got him started in callmaking. Why buy one when you can make one yourself?
