Synopsis

Years after a young naval captain rescues her from a torture camp, Clarissa Finley wants only to hide—from her heritage, from the horrors in her past, and most of all from the people who would send her back without a second thought. Clarissa is Lollan, a race blamed for economic recession and a plague which killed thousands. Marked as a fugitive by an L-shaped brand on her forearm, Clarissa must stay hidden to stay alive.

But hiding her brand proves more difficult than she expects, and Renwick, the politician responsible for the torture camp, has spies everywhere. Driven from her childhood home by his pursuit, Clarissa manages to land a job as a maid only to discover that not only is her new employer the enigmatic Captain Ian Hartman, her one-time rescuer, but also that Ian is operating an underground railroad out of his basement. Her presence is a danger to Ian’s cause, but neither can she simply disappear for fear of attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Except Clarissa isn’t sure that she wants to leave anymore, since she is falling in love with Ian. That is, until one of Renwick’s spies discovers her brand and blackmails Clarissa into terrible choice: betray Ian and the smuggling organization, or return to the torture camp.

If she agrees, Renwick will destroy the only hope her people have for survival.

If she refuses, Renwick will destroy her.

When she’s not writing about conniving plots and daring escapes, you can find her teaching math and science to her group of crazy middle and high-schoolers.
