Alan E. Nourse was an American science fiction writer and physician whose fiction often combined speculative ideas with social pressure, medical knowledge, scientific change, and moral consequence. Born in 1928, Nourse became active in the science fiction magazines of the 1950s and wrote novels, short stories, juvenile science fiction, and nonfiction science and medical books. His work is often marked by clear storytelling, future-facing premises, and an interest in how technological change alters ordinary human life.Nourse is remembered for works such as The Bladerunner, which later gave its title-though not its plot-to Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner, as well as for juvenile and adult science fiction that explored medicine, space, social strain, and the human cost of progress.
