Alan E. Nourse was an American physician, science writer, and science fiction author whose work brought a medically and scientifically informed intelligence to the magazine science fiction of the mid-twentieth century. Born in 1928, Nourse wrote fiction during one of the field's most important periods of expansion, contributing stories and novels that combined adventure, speculation, scientific problem-solving, and concern for the human consequences of technology. His background in medicine gave much of his fiction a practical clarity and an interest in the body, disease, survival, and the ethical demands created by scientific discovery.Nourse is remembered both for his science fiction and for his nonfiction science and medical writing. His speculative fiction includes works such as The Bladerunner, Star Surgeon, Rocket to Limbo, and numerous shorter pieces from the classic magazine era. Across his career he helped define a strand of American science fiction that valued readable storytelling, technological imagination, and grounded scientific curiosity. His work remains of interest to readers of Golden Age science fiction, vintage science fiction adventure, medical science fiction, and the rediscovered magazine literature of the 1950s and 1960s.
