Harry Harrison (1925-2012) was an American science fiction writer, editor, illustrator, and anthologist whose work combined energetic storytelling with satire, invention, and a deep suspicion of bureaucracy, militarism, and unexamined authority. Born Henry Maxwell Dempsey in Stamford, Connecticut, Harrison served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during the Second World War and later worked in comics, illustration, and magazine publishing before becoming one of the best-known science fiction authors of the postwar era.Harrison is widely remembered for the Stainless Steel Rat series, the Deathworld novels, Make Room! Make Room!, and numerous short stories that helped define the lively, irreverent side of classic science fiction. His fiction often moves quickly, but beneath the action is a sharp intelligence: he used planetary adventure, criminal capers, ecological danger, and social satire to question violence, overpopulation, militarised thinking, and the assumption that humanity's first answer to any problem should be force.
