Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) was an English historian and Member of Parliament whose The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of historical writing. Published between 1776 and 1789, the six-volume work traces the transformation and eventual fall of the Roman Empire through centuries of political, military, and religious change. Gibbon's elegant prose, careful use of sources, and broad analytical perspective established a new standard for historical scholarship and narrative history.
