Hercule-Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a French dramatist and duelist. He is now best remembered for the works of fiction which have been woven, often very loosely, around his life story, most notably the 1897 play by Edmond Rostand. In these fictional works he is featured with an overly large nose, which people would travel from miles around to see. Portraits suggest that he did have a big nose, though not nearly as large as described by Rostand.

Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) was a French poet and dramatist best known for Cyrano de Bergerac, one of the most enduring works of modern French theater. Born in Marseille and educated in Paris, Rostand began writing during a period when naturalism and realism dominated the stage, but he found success by reviving romance, verse drama, heroic gesture, and theatrical grandeur.Rostand's plays include Les Romanesques, La Princesse Lointaine, La Samaritaine, L'Aiglon, and Chantecler, but Cyrano de Bergerac remains his masterpiece. First performed in Paris in 1897, the play made Rostand famous almost overnight and gave the theater one of its great heroic roles. His writing is admired for its verbal brilliance, emotional sweep, humor, and ability to combine spectacle with genuine feeling.Although his career was sometimes viewed as standing apart from the literary movements of his age, Rostand's work has endured because of its theatrical vitality and emotional directness. Cyrano de Bergerac continues to be performed, translated, filmed, and adapted around the world, and its title character remains a symbol of wit, courage, pride, romantic longing, and noble self-sacrifice.
