The Sign of the Four is the second Sherlock Holmes book. Its complex plot involves service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts and two corrupt prison guards. It presents Sherlock Holmes' drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in A Study in Scarlet. It also introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish writer and physician best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, one of the most enduring characters in detective fiction. Doyle's Holmes stories-including A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, and the many short stories featuring Holmes and Dr. Watson-helped establish the modern detective genre. Beyond Holmes, Doyle also wrote historical novels, adventure tales, science fiction, and works of spiritual inquiry.
Darrell Schweitzer (b. 1952) is an American writer, editor, and critic best known for his contributions to fantasy, horror, and weird fiction. A longtime figure in the speculative fiction field, Schweitzer has written numerous short stories, novels, essays, and critical works, and has served as co-editor of Weird Tales magazine for many years. His fiction often blends elements of dark fantasy, classic weird literature, and philosophical speculation, drawing inspiration from authors such as Lord Dunsany and Clark Ashton Smith. Among his best-known works are the stories of the eccentric philosopher-magician Sir Julian, along with collections including We Are All Legends, Transients and Other Disquieting Stories, and The White Isle.In addition to his fiction, Schweitzer has been an influential commentator on fantasy and horror literature, writing essays and criticism on classic authors and the history of the genre. He remains an active presence in the speculative fiction community as a writer, editor, and critic.
