Synopsis

The family from which I am derived is not an ignoble one, but hath descended all along from the priests; and as nobility among several people is of a different origin, so with us to be of the sacerdotal dignity, is an indication of the splendor of a family.

À propos des auteurs

Flavius Josephus (c. 37-100 CE) was a Jewish historian and former military commander who lived during the first century of the Roman Empire. Born in Jerusalem to a priestly family, Josephus initially fought against Rome during the Jewish revolt before later entering the service of the Roman emperors Vespasian and Titus. His major works-including The Jewish War, Antiquities of the Jews, and The Life of Flavius Josephus-remain among the most important surviving sources for the history of Judea and the Roman world of the first century.

William Whiston (1667-1752) was an English theologian, historian, and mathematician best known for his influential English translation of the works of Josephus. First published in the early eighteenth century, Whiston's translation became the standard English version for generations of readers and played a major role in making Josephus's histories widely accessible to the English-speaking world.
