Synopsis

I have carried the manuscript of these translations about with me for days, reading it in railway trains, or on the top of omnibuses and in restaurants, and I have often had to close it lest some stranger would see how much it moved me. These lyrics-which are in the original full of subtlety of rhythm, of untranslatable delicacies of colour, of metrical invention-display in their thought a world I have dreamed of all my live long.

À propos des auteurs

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali poet, philosopher, composer, and educator whose work reshaped modern Indian literature. He became the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, awarded largely for Gitanjali. His writing spans poetry, fiction, drama, and essays, and reflects a synthesis of artistic, spiritual, and cultural traditions.

W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of twentieth-century literature. A central force in the Irish Literary Revival, Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. His association with Gitanjali helped introduce Tagore's work to a broad international readership and played a significant role in its early reception.
